The Unkindness Club: Purdy Franklin Mysteries #1
I had the honor of illustrating The Unkindness Club: Purdy Franklin Mysteries #1, written by Jill Ammon Vanderwood. This meaningful middle-grade mystery follows Persephone “Purdy” Franklin, a deaf young girl whose life takes an unexpected turn as she navigates friendship, identity, and mystery.
As a deaf artist, this project connected deeply with me. I focused on bringing authentic emotion, expression, and storytelling into every illustration—especially through body language and visual storytelling that reflects the beauty of communication beyond sound.
My Role as Illustrator
Created detailed black-and-white interior illustrations
Designed expressive character moments to match key story scenes
Illustrated American Sign Language (ASL) elements throughout the book
Collaborated with the author to ensure accuracy and emotional impact
Artistic Style
My illustrations for this book are crafted in a clean, expressive style that blends realism with storytelling. Each piece is designed to:
Capture emotion through movement and gesture
Highlight the unique identity of a deaf main character
Support the mystery and imagination within the story
Why This Project Matters
This book is more than a mystery—it represents inclusion, identity, and the power of communication. Being part of this story allowed me to share a piece of the deaf experience through art, helping readers connect in a deeper and more meaningful way.
Persephone “Purdy” Franklin is an ordinary 10-year-old girl… until her life changes overnight.
By day, Purdy is navigating school, friendships, and the world as a deaf girl who sees and understands things in her own unique way. But by night, something incredible happens—she transforms into a cat.
With her loyal best friend Rowen by her side, Purdy is pulled into a growing mystery surrounding a strange and secretive group known as The Unkindness Club. As clues begin to surface, the two friends must uncover the truth, follow the trail, and face challenges that test their courage and trust.
Blending mystery, adventure, and heart, this story highlights the power of friendship, identity, and communication—including the use of American Sign Language (ASL) woven throughout the journey.
Perfect for middle-grade readers, The Unkindness Club is a unique and imaginative story where differences become strengths—and every clue brings you closer to something bigger than expected.
